Customer Feedback

“I am equally impressed with the professional and efficient manner in which you were able to maneuver the boat, clear the lines and prep the boat to in order to land this massive fish. I didn‘t even realize the work that you were doing for my benefit until we had the fish netted and in the boat. To me, that is the best advertising for your business! Showing me how well you do your job speaks louder than anyone telling me how well they can do their job. Blackfeather Charters really knows their stuff.”

Captain's Letters

Spring has finally arrived! There is still fresh snow on the local mountains, but have turned the corner towards summer. We have been busy getting the boat ready and taking bookings. I think the global situation has a number of people wondering what to do about their summer, but with such a strong forecast for salmon returns in the North coast, this is a season not to miss. We have our camera installed on the boat to video the big catches for you, and have a few other tricks to try out this year for monster halibut. The bears are starting to come out of their dens, and a few have been sighted on the beaches and riverbanks along the Skeena. It won't belong before we start seeing the spring salmon showing up in large numbers and our fishing season will be in full swing.

The herring have now made it into the region in massive numbers. With them come the early spring salmon, which are getting landed right in Metlakatla Pass. One friend had four springs for yesterday's bite, all in the high teens. The harbour was visited by a pod of Orcas this week, no doubt they were in following the herring. They came in the south entrance and swam up to Tuck Inlet before returning out passed the terminals to the open water again. We have the boat back into storage where we can wax and polish it up for the season without worrying about the weather. It is still very cold and snow is almost a daily occurence, even if it melts away before evening arrives. The start of the main fishing season is really only a few weeks away now, and everything is coming together to make for a terrific fishing season.

The first charter of the season is only days away. This charter will shuttle some important people to the villages a little south from Prince Rupert where they have business to conduct. Fortunately for us, that means there will be some down time for the boat while we are waiting for their meetings to finish. This will provide a great opportunity to fish some new spots that I have been drooling over this winter. Finally we are coming out of the winter freeze, and back into serious fishing!

We have been looking at installing a remote lens for a digital video camera to record all of the great fishing that we enjoy on the charters. This investment would mean that we would be able to send our clients a video record of their fishing trip on a DVD or memory stick. Imagine showing your friends and family the great fishing and scenery from the beautiful north coast of BC, in addition to your photo collection. We are scheduled to have this unit installed in May, and if the trial runs go well, should be fully functional for the upcoming season. Anyone that has fished with Blackfeather Charters knows that we are up early and fish as long as we can each day, so the DVD's might have to be mailed out after the season is wrapped up. We are very excited to be able to extend this great idea to our clients, and are looking forward to another fantastic season on the water.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada claim the water temperature is the coldest in 11 years and the ocean conditions are perfect for setting up huge runs of returning Chinook and Coho for 2009 in the North Coast. This is great news for Prince Rupert and North Coast anglers looking to land some beautiful fish this season. With the upgrades on the boat coming along very smoothly, Blackfeather Charters will be ready to focus on catching some monster springs and coho.

The boat is getting an electronic upgrade this season in the form of a black box. For those of you that might not know, the downriggers throw out an electrical charge as they drag through the water. Depending on a number of factors, it can either be attractive or repulsive to fish, especially salmon. The black box is a unit that controls the electrical charge, and ensures that the optimum current is being emitted from the boat, and attracting those lunker springs and Coho to the gear. Commercial fishermen have known this fact for decades, and most trollers spend a terrific amount of time going over their electrical systems and black boxes. The Blackfeather has always produced great fishing results, and this is just another tool we can use to target massive spring and coho salmon on our charters. Fishing is all about utilizing our advantages to produce the best results, and the black box will ensure that we are focused in the right areas. This is an exciting addition to the Blackfeather, and one that we will all appreciate when the cooler is full.

Winter storms blowing today, somewhere between 40 and 50 knots. It feels more like 80. Not a great day to be on the water, but it is a great day to tie some halibut and cut plugging gear. Gamakatsu and Owner hooks with SeaGuar flurocarbon leaders make some terrific setups for halibut, springs and coho. The Blackfeather is stored for these winter months, but that doesn't mean that Blackfeather Charters is sitting idle. Currently, Bridgeview Marine is doing some electronic upgrades (more info to follow) to help make this coming season very successful.
